The implicit link name shorcut allows the 2nd set of square brackets to be empty and the id should then be the same to the link name, ie the text in the first square brackets, although the ids are not case sensitive. 

[My Link text][ref_id]

[ref_id]: https://mylink.com "Optional link title"
